GREG MENDEZ SIGNS TO DEAD OCEANS

ANNOUNCES NEW EP FIRST TIME / ALONE OUT 18TH OF OCTOBER

Philadelphia-based singer-songwriter Greg Mendez has signed with Dead Oceans, marking a significant milestone in his career.

The artist has announced his upcoming EP, "First Time / Alone," set for release on October 18th. Alongside this news, Mendez has shared the EP's lead single, "First Time," described as a funereal track that sets the tone for the collection.

The EP "First Time / Alone" was crafted during a challenging period for Mendez. Following the success of his self-titled breakthrough album, which received acclaim from publications like Rolling Stone and Pitchfork, Mendez underwent intensive surgery on his right wrist. This led to a four-month hiatus from playing guitar, during which he composed the EP's A-side using only his left hand on an electric organ.

The four songs on the EP were recorded chronologically in Mendez's West Philadelphia apartment, using a four-track recorder. The result is a spectral, dreamlike collection that captures a sense of solitude and introspection. From the mournful opening of "Mountain Dew Hell" to the pitched-up vocals on "Pain Meds," the EP offers a glimpse into the intimate worlds Mendez creates through his songwriting.

Mendez's artistry extends beyond his music. The EP's cover features stars found in a friend's sketchbook, colored by Mendez with oil pastels, reflecting the handmade aesthetic that permeates his work. This attention to visual detail is also evident in the cover of his self-titled album, a color pencil illustration created in collaboration with his wife and bandmate, Veronica.

Known for his intuitive songwriting, Mendez has a knack for balancing gritty narratives with moments of tenderness and hope. His lyrics often chronicle vivid experiences of violence and instability, interwoven with love songs and odes to friendship. This ability to find light in dark situations has become a hallmark of his work.

In addition to the EP announcement, Mendez has revealed that his self-titled album will be reissued through Dead Oceans, with pre-orders now available. He has also announced a U.S. tour, including dates supporting Angel Olsen and Allegra Krieger, giving fans the opportunity to experience his affecting live performances across the country.
