Chihei Hatakeyama and Shun Ishiwaka Release New Single "M5"

Ambient and Jazz Virtuosos Collaborate on Magnificent Little Dudes Vol.2

Chihei Hatakeyama and Shun Ishiwaka, two of Japan's most prominent experimental musicians, have unveiled their latest single "M5" from their upcoming album Magnificent Little Dudes Vol.2.

The track, spanning nearly 19 minutes, showcases the duo's ability to create vast, emotive soundscapes through minimalist compositions. Hatakeyama's reverb-soaked guitar lines interweave with Ishiwaka's complex, understated percussion, resulting in a heavy yet ethereal piece that pushes the boundaries of their collaborative work.

Hatakeyama describes "M5" as his favorite track from the session, revealing his aim to create a shoegaze-inspired sound. He nostalgically reflects on his musical journey, stating, "If there was a time machine, I would go back and tell my younger self that I will have the opportunity to play a session with a great drummer in 20 years."

Magnificent Little Dudes Vol.2 follows the success of its predecessor, which garnered praise from publications like MOJO and Uncut. Recorded in a single day, the album promises to deliver an eclectic mix of obscure beats, samples, and expansive soundscapes that showcase the duo's improvisational prowess.

Chihei Hatakeyama, a prolific sound artist and mastering engineer, has released over 70 albums since his debut in 2006. His work spans various genres and has earned him recognition on international platforms, including ranking in Spotify's top 10 "Most Played Domestic Artists Abroad."

Shun Ishiwaka, at just 31 years old, has established himself as one of Japan's most sought-after jazz drummers. With over 100 collaborations under his belt, he has worked with renowned artists and contributed to significant soundtrack projects, including the theme song for "The Boy and The Heron."

The collaboration between Hatakeyama and Ishiwaka represents a meeting of two versatile musicians with diverse influences, ranging from ambient and experimental to jazz and metal. Their partnership on Magnificent Little Dudes Vol.2 demonstrates that sometimes, less truly is more in the realm of creative expression.

Magnificent Little Dudes Vol.2 is set for digital release on October 18th via Gearbox Records, with a vinyl version planned for future release.
