[Monthly Mixing] TechCrunch reports that TikTok is introducing a new 'Sound Search' feature, allowing users to identify songs by singing, humming, or playing them. This comes after YouTube Music recently added a similar sound search functionality.
According to TechCrunch, the feature is currently in the testing phase and available only to a limited number of users in specific regions. While it operates similarly to YouTube Music's feature, TikTok's Sound Search goes a step further by linking identified songs to relevant TikTok videos.
TikTok's Sound Search feature appears to be a response to YouTube Music's music search function. It's expected to be particularly useful for TikTok users in keeping up with and understanding the latest trends on the social network platform.
Initial tests by TechCrunch showed that Sound Search effectively recognized popular songs frequently used on the platform. For instance, it accurately identified the "oh no oh no oh no no no" part from Rihanna's 'Umbrella'. However, the tool showed limitations with less popular songs.
While TikTok explained that the tool is designed for song identification, TechCrunch reported that it could also recognize and process TikTok-specific sounds and memes.
The release date for Sound Search to all users remains undetermined.
